Eight Florida players made the preseason All-SEC teams a year ago. This year, three did.
The market has not been sentimental about it. +2000 for the conference is joint eighth in a sixteen-team league. +5500 for the national title is joint sixteenth, behind Texas Tech, USC and Michigan. Both prices are identical to Tennessee’s, in both markets. The media poll picked Florida ninth. For once the voters and the book are looking at the same team and seeing the same thing.
Jon Sumrall’s first roster does not have a named quarterback. Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. have been splitting reps since March and neither has taken the job. You can now bet on which one starts: Philo -150, Jones +115.

Some context on the opponent. Florida Atlantic are +500000 for the national title and +3000 to win the American, where they are ninth of fourteen. This is the fifth meeting between the two and Florida have won all four, the last a 35-14 result in 2021.
So nobody is betting the winner. The interest is entirely in who walks out first, and that is a separate market.

Those two add to 106.5%. Strip the margin and it is 56% Philo, 44% Jones. Sumrall has said the depth chart is fluid, that the two are sharing reps with the same pitch count in each group, and that he believes Florida could play winning football with either. Take him at his word and the short price is shorter than the situation.
Philo is the redshirt sophomore, a Georgia Tech transfer who arrived with three years of eligibility and, more usefully, already knows Buster Faulkner’s system. Jones is the redshirt freshman who stayed through the coaching change and says he is healthy for the first time since arriving. Neither separated in spring. Neither has separated since.
Alabama are priced line-for-line identically, Austin Mack -150 and Keelon Russell +115. Tennessee is the one job the book thinks it understands, Faizon Brandon -250 against George MacIntyre at +185.

Seven teams are priced shorter than Florida. The Gators play four of them: Ole Miss at home on 26 September, Texas in Austin on 17 October, Georgia in Atlanta on 31 October and Oklahoma at home on 7 November. That is the number behind the number. 4.8% is not a verdict on the roster so much as a verdict on the fixture list.

Six SEC teams are priced ahead of Florida nationally. So are Texas Tech, USC and Michigan. In a twelve-team playoff the entry price is a good record against a hard schedule, and 1.8% says the book does not expect a first-year roster with an unnamed quarterback to produce one.
Our Call
There is no argument to be made that Florida are mispriced for the conference. There is an argument that they are mispriced in one specific game, and it is the game they already won.

Pass on +2000 for the SEC and +5500 for the national. Wait for Florida at Texas on 17 October. Florida beat Texas last season, one of three defeats that kept a preseason number one out of the playoff, and they get them again seven days after the Red River Rivalry. Texas are +280 for this conference and +775 for the national title. Jadan Baugh ran for 1,170 yards last year and is the first Gator to return as a 1,000-yard rusher since Errict Rhett in 1992. Jon Sumrall arrives on a 78.2% career win rate. A team with one proven ball carrier and a defence that has kept Myles Graham and Jayden Woods is exactly the shape of side that ruins somebody’s October. What kills it: no named quarterback, and four of the seven teams priced above Florida on the schedule. Three All-SEC selections against eight a year ago is not a market overreaction. It is a roster that lost Jake Slaughter, Caleb Banks, Austin Barber and DJ Lagway and has not replaced them yet. |
Three Games That Decide It
Ole Miss, 26 September, The Swamp. First SEC game of the Sumrall era and it arrives at home against a side priced +1000, sixth in the conference market. Florida will have played two non-conference games and been to Auburn by then. This is the first honest reading of what the roster is.
Texas, 17 October, Austin. The Gators beat Texas in 2025 and go back a week after the Longhorns play Oklahoma. Texas are the conference favourite at +280 and their own hardest week is the one before this. Look-ahead traps run in both directions, but this one has recent history attached.
Georgia, 31 October, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The series moves to Atlanta for the first time in a rivalry dating to 1915, with EverBank Stadium under renovation. Georgia are +350 and were the media’s predicted conference champion. Florida come into it off their only bye.
The one nobody is talking about is Kentucky away on 14 November. Kentucky are +15000, second longest in the league, and they beat Florida last season.

Baugh appears twice, second team at running back and third team as an all-purpose player, so three players account for four selections. Brown III is there as a return specialist rather than a receiver, which undersells him: he led the team with 40 catches for 512 yards as a true freshman, the first Gator freshman to top both categories, and became the first in program history to collect three All-SEC honours in a season. Woods led the team in sacks with three and a half as a true freshman.
Aaron Philo (#12, R-So., Georgia Tech) and Tramell Jones Jr. are the quarterbacks and neither was selected. Nor was Myles Graham (#5, Jr.), the five-star linebacker who went to Media Days in Tampa alongside Baugh and Brown III. A year ago Florida put eight players on these teams. That is the gap the market is pricing.
