2026 NFL Week 1 Betting Guide: Opening Lines, Best Bets & Super Bowl Contenders

Identify key quarterback matchups for Week 1 and play the right spreads
and totals for early-season value

The 2026 NFL season opens on a Wednesday night with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks vs. the New England Patriots. A Super Bowl LX rematch right out of the gate.

Fans making their NFL betting picks will be tempted to go hard on that one plus all the
NFL opening week bets after 7 months of zero action.

When it comes to Week 1 odds 2026 though, the smart money knows to pump the brakes a little, picking their spots before going all-in.

Seahawks Begin Their Title Defense Under Pressure

The Seahawks took down the Pats 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, but the game was a snoozer from the first snap. Long season, long playoffs, not much left in the tank for either side.

Expect this one to be a little different for a number of reasons. Both teams are fresh now and both still have Super Bowl-level talent and have added more.

Seattle is listed as a 3.5-point home favorite. That makes sense on the surface. They went 17-3 last season and brings back QB Sam Darnold, all-world wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and the same core from its championship team. They added Rashid Shaheed to stretch the field at WR too.

We’re not sure the upgrades that Patriots have made are being priced in though. They suddenly have two brand new, close to elite WRs for QB Drake Maye to throw to in Romeo Doubs and AJ Brown. They strengthened their protection for Maye on the O-line and added a top edge rusher in Dre’Mont Jones.

Adding all that to the Super Bowl runner-up? Against a Super Bowl champ being priced at a premium, even though the consensus was they were the softest champions in years?  We’ll take the +150 for New England.

The 44.5 total might be offering more value, instead of forcing one side ATS or on the moneyline. Both teams know each other very well after all that SB prep. Plus there’s the pressure of opening night which can tighten things up for players and play-callers in the booth. The insane crowd noise at Lumen Field can also limit offenses and their ability to adjust at the line.

Opening Week’s Quarterback Tests

NFL Week 1 offers some QB matchups where you can find a betting edge.

The first is Darnold against New England’s defense. We all keep waiting for the old Sam Darnold to re-appear, the shaky one from 3-4 seasons ago, and the one that did have a rough playoff game for the Vikings just two seasons ago. It might come this week as the Pats’ D is relentless, and the early season often puts offenses out of sync. QBs and their receivers have mostly had only camp reps when it comes to the starters, so that’s another strike against Darnold.

Add in the Pats’ D coming in 4th in the entire league in points allowed and total yardage last year. They also added Jones as their first free agent signing of the offseason. He could rattle Darnold early and often.

On Thursday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers square off against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne.

The Rams are coming in hot as the consensus Super Bowl favorite in NFL futures, priced at +450. It’s Brock Purdy, the Niners’ QB, who’ll have to be the first guinea pig for the entire league against the nightmare combo of Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett. We’re giving Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford the big edge in this one. Purdy and the Niners could be running for their lives all night.

Buffalo at Houston is another game worth watching for QB mismatch. The Bills are again near the top of the board at +1000 to win it all and you know Josh Allen is ready to make another Super Bowl push. The Texans’ D is elite, but CJ Stroud has had such a drop-off at quarterback that Allen and the Bills should come out on top ATS (it’s basically a pick’em at -1) and on the moneyline.

A small home road favorite with the league’s best quarterback is usually worth a hard look, especially with so many doubts around Stroud. This one might even be worth getting on some alternate lines with the Bills as the pick against a bigger spread for a bigger payday.

NFL Week 1 Spreads and Totals Worth Targeting

It’s Week 1. Teams have limited tape while coordinators are still tweaking plays and lineups. The books only have last season’s data to go from, which isn’t exactly precise. Public money, sidelined since February, is pouring in on the brand name players and teams. Betting opportunities are definitely in play.

Kansas City’s Week 1 home game against Denver is a where the number matters more than the name value. The Chiefs have been posted at -2.5, with the total at 43.5. Kansas City is still a +1500 Super Bowl contender, but Denver might deserve more respect than their +1800 is showing. That’s not a major gap, especially when you consider KC’s aging crew against the Broncos’ younger side and factor in Mahomes coming back from ACL and LCL tears. The Broncos have the defense to keep this one close or even win outright. QB Bo Nix has another year under his belt too.

Jacksonville is the biggest favorite on the early Sunday board against Cleveland, with the lines ranging from Jaguars -8.5 and a total at 40.5. The number says the Jaguars should control the game but laying that much in Week 1 with a low total is dangerous. Lower totals reduce the margin for error.

Tough call here. The Browns are in shambles (what’s new?), losing Garrett in the offseason and somehow naming DeShaun Watson as the Week 1 starter even though he’s been seen missing receivers badly in multiple clips from camp. Week 1 spreads over one TD can be tricky since both teams are still in some kind of preseason test mode.

Then again, Liam Coen is now in Year 2 as the Jags’ head coach. That’s a good spot for coaches to really begin getting comfortable and hitting their stride.

Jacksonville QB Trevor Lawrence really came on in the second half of the season too, taking the Jaguars to an 8-0 record and tossing 24 TDs in the process. Ok, so maybe not a tough call. The Jags ATS and the Over both look nice.
