The Day Tennis Refused To Go Home: US Open’s Super Saturday

Four matches. Sixteen sets. Zero shortcuts. This was Super Saturday.

Tennis runs on tradition. Same courts, same schedule, same Labor Day ritual every year. In 1983, that script almost cost the broadcast — Navratilova dusted Evert in the US Open final so fast the network was left filling dead air with replays.

The 1984 version became something else entirely – both men’s semifinals and the women’s final into one Saturday session. This was Super Saturday.

1. Refused To Go Home Hero number: 16 SETS

Four matches. Sixteen sets. Every single one ran the full distance — odds nobody sane would take. The day opened with the men’s 35-and-over draw, Stan Smith outlasting John Newcombe 4–6, 7–5, 6–2.

Then Lendl and Cash went five brutal sets in the first Men’s Semi. Lendl won 3–6, 6–3, 6–4, 6–7 (5), 7–6 (4). Cash, 19 years old at the time, called it the most unbelievable match of his life. 

Navratilova and Evert needed three sets — 4–6, 6–4, 6–4 — with a crowd rooting hard for Evert and getting nothing for it. Navratilova closed it out in under two hours. Her win that afternoon put the rivalry ahead for the first time in years, 31–30.

McEnroe and Connors capped the night with five more — 6–4, 4–6, 7–5, 4–6, 6–3. Both players said it topped their legendary 1980 semifinal.

2. Not Just One Outlier Hero number: 165 GAMES

A typical women’s final runs somewhere around 22 to 26 games. Saturday’s ran 30. A competitive men’s match sits around 35 to 42. McEnroe and Connors alone played 51. Nothing about Super Saturday produced a single outlier — it produced four of them, back to back, in front of a Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd that topped 20,000 by the time the night session started. 

Total across all four matches: 165 games. That’s not a bracket quirk. That’s the entire sport showing up on one court, on one day, and refusing to leave early.

3.  Nearly A Thousand Points Before Midnight Hero number: 979 Points

The average men’s five-set major runs somewhere between 200 and 250 points. A women’s three-set final typically lands between 100 and 150. Run four matches through that math simultaneously and you land somewhere around 900. Super Saturday came out the other side with 979 — nearly 1,000 points played before midnight.

Every player on court that day had already won a Grand Slam title — except Cash, whose lone major was still three years out. Seven of the eight would eventually land in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.  Tennis Fame

4. The Clock Finally Stops Hero number: 11:14

McEnroe didn’t take the court for the final match until after 7 PM.

He lost his serve seven times. Connors pushed him to a fifth set. McEnroe won anyway — 6–4, 4–6, 7–5, 4–6, 6–3 — finishing at 11:14 PM under the lights, 12 hours and 7 minutes after the first ball was struck.

Eighteen hours later, McEnroe faced Lendl in Sunday’s final. Lendl had wrapped his semifinal a full six hours earlier. Rest didn’t matter. McEnroe routed him, 6–3, 6–4, 6–1, for his fourth US Open title.

He was 25. His record for the year moved to 66–2. He’d never win another Grand Slam singles title again.

The longest continuous sports broadcast in American television history. Not a game. Not a full tournament. One Saturday at the US Open.  It proved the sport could survive anything it threw at itself – nostalgia, mythology – and come out bigger on the other side.
